On November 22, 1982, in Soufanieh, a Christian district of Damascus, Syria, Nicolas Nazzour's young Greek-Catholic wife, Myrna, was praying at the bedside of her ailing sister-in-law with two other women, one Orthodox, the other Muslim. The latter was very surprised when she noticed Myrna's hands were shiny and oozing oil. She alerted Myrna, who hadn't noticed it. She was confused and didn't know what to do. Eventually, Myrna laid her hands on the sick woman, who was instantly relieved of her suffering.
A few days later, on November 27, the feast of the Miraculous Medal, at the same hour that Saint Catherine Labourée had seen the Virgin and the medal, Myrna noticed that a small, simple image of the Virgin Mary in her room, brought by her husband from Sofia, was dripping oil. Nicolas was called in and found that oil was dripping from the bottom of the image onto the floor beside their bed. Myrna's hands were also oozing oil. As everyone present began to pray, Myrna fell into a deep silence and heard a feminine voice say to her:
"Mary (Myrna is a nickname only), do not fear, I am with you. Open your doors; deprive no one of my sight. Light a candle for me".
At first Myrna thought the voice came from her imagination, but a sudden power outage plunged the house into darkness, forcing her to light a candle. Told of this, despite his reluctance, Nicolas opened his house to visitors. Since then, thousands of people from all walks of life, religions and denominations have come to their house to pray, while the Nazzour family continues to live there, as best they can.
In the course of five apparitions and inner visions, Myrna received a series of messages from Mary and Jesus. When Father Zahlaoui, who had followed the events from the beginning, was asked what he considered to be the main message, he replied:
"The Church is the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. Whoever has divided it has sinned, and whoever has rejoiced in her divisions has also sinned." Despite the hodgepodge of jurisdictions - each person, Myrna, Nicholas, the priests who followed them, being under the charge of a different bishop - Myrna's Catholic bishop gave his blessing, placed a reproduction of the image in his church and granted the imprimatur to books promoting this new shrine and apparition.
