Beginning on June 25, 1981, six children claimed to have daily visions of the Virgin Mary, who gave her name as the "Queen of Peace" in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Her initial message was surprising: "Make peace, be reconciled!" What did she mean? The region had been at peace since 1945! But 10 years later, to the day, a terrible civil war broke out in the Balkans. The village was attacked, but miraculously protected during the fighting.
Millions of pilgrims came to the village before and after the war, and continue to flock there today, in order to pray, to be reconciled with God through sacramental confession, and to hear what the Blessed Mother wishes to tell them. Many priests and bishops have witnessed significant graces and spiritual fruits coming from Medjugorje, which has unquestionably become one of the leading places of conversion in the world. Many vocations to the priesthood and the religious life have been born there.
Today, worship there is officially sanctioned by Rome, as well as diocesan pilgrimages and those of other institutions.
