In June 1981, in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in a communist Yugoslavia on the verge of collapse, six children claimed to have seen a Lady on the hill of Podbordo, near their home. This first silent apparition was to be followed by a large number of encounters with Heaven.
In the first years, the children would converse with the Lady on a daily basis and regularly pass on what they had heard. Then, from March 1, 1984, to January 8, 1987, the visionaries began receiving weekly messages only. These were at first intended for the villagers, then for the whole world. Finally, from January 25, 1987, until today (end of 2018), monthly messages have been received on the 25th of each month. Their number is therefore unprecedented!
The message of Medjugorje is above all a person: the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Redeemer, our Mother, whom the visionaries call Gospa (Our Lady in Croatian). In Medjugorje, Mary calls herself the Queen of Peace. This name reveals an aspect of her identity as Mother of the Prince of Peace, and her intention: "Dear children, I invite you to peace, so that you may live it in your hearts and around you, so that all may know this peace which comes, not from you, but from God ... It is for this peace that I have come as Mother and Queen of Peace." (Message of December 25, 1988)
The Virgin Mary comes to teach us peace and reconciliation, by teaching us to return to Jesus Christ who gives us peace ... After a pastoral visit of several months, Archbishop Höser was appointed by the Pope on May 31, 2018 as Apostolic Visitor for the parish of Medjugorje, for an indefinite period of time. While Archbishop Höser's mission is not to study the phenomenon of apparitions or issue a verdict on them, he is nevertheless entrusted with the pastoral care of the population of this village as well as the pilgrims, whose number is estimated at 2.5 million each year.
The Church's judgment is still pending.
