Above Nice, in the Alpes Maritimes (France), the charming little Provencal village of Lucéram has become famous thanks to its 450 nativity scenes scattered in all the corners and alleys, for the past 20 years, during the period of Advent and until the feast of Epiphany. This year, visitors were able to admire these representations of the Nativity between December 2, 2017 and January 7, 2018.
The nativity scenes change somewhat from year to year, some creative touches always being added. They are also set up in the most unexpected places. The onlookers never tire of seeing them, as they change places and appearance every year, according to the imagination of the residents.
"I inherited a collection of 110 Provençal santons. They represent the whole village in the 19th century," a retired woman says. There is the baker, seamstresses, shepherds, and many other characters carefully designed by craftsmen santonniers. "You have to take the time to look at the details, it's so fascinating," she explains as she points to them.
This successful event is made possible both by the large participation of Lucéram residents, and by the support of La Maison de pays, an organization that promotes tourism and even lends some rooms. Thanks to them, the Lucéram Circuit des Crèches (Nativity Scenes Tour) attracts more and more visitors each year, who come to admire them in an atmosphere of beauty, sweetness and joy that correspond perfectly to the time of the Nativity.
