August 13 – 4th apparition in Fatima: the children were jailed

The missed appointment at Fatima

The Virgin Mary had made an appointment with the three children of Fatima (Portugal) to meet at the Cova da Iria on August 13, 1917. But in the morning of that day, several men arrived at the Martos (relatives of the seers) and forced the children to get into their horse-drawn cart to go to the local police station.

An hour and a half later, the three young seers were locked in a room, where they underwent exhausting interrogations. Then they were put in the public jail, as a means of pressuring them into saying publicly that they had lied about the apparitions. But the children remained silent, and since the crowds were beginning to express anger at the treatment of the children, the authorities decided to release them on August 15th.

In the meantime, Our Lady actually came to the Cova da Iria on August 13th. About 18,000 people assembled there heard a thunderclap, then saw the reflection of a light appear, followed by a small cloud that hovered a few moments above the oak tree, before rising to the sky and disappearing. Then a rainbow appeared, about the height of a man, coloring all nature with beautiful colors. Our Lady had evidently kept the appointment of August 13, 1917.
