It hasn’t rained for a whole year, livestock lies dead along roadsides, and every day cholera claims more victims, because of a shortage of medicine and medical staff, who lack even thermometers to measure fevers while the outside temperature exceeds 113° Fahrenheit: this describes the current situation in the Somali Region of Ethiopia.
Father Christopher Hartley, a Spanish missionary and a member of a Christian humanitarian organization who has lived in Gode (a city in the region between Ethiopia and Somalia) since 2008, invited all Christians in the region to pray the Rosary together: "Let us pray that God will give strength to the Ethiopian people to resist, and sensitize the West through intense prayer and some material offerings."
A few days after his public appeal, Father Hartley said: "Dear friends, thank you for your generosity. Yesterday, I was able to accompany the first water truck to the first village, 70 km from Gode. I can’t put into words the emotion and joy of the people! I am going to another village today and every day of the week. Each truck carries 6,300 gallons of water!"
