Father Maurizio Pallù, 63, an Italian missionary priest, was kidnapped in Benin City, southern Nigeria, in mid-October 2017. He was freed a week later and returned to Florence, Italy.
Father Pallù told Vatican Radio that "I had moments of fear but I felt Our Lady’s help, as well as the help of other saints and of Carmen Hernandez (founder of the Neocatecumenal Way). They took three of us hostage, a Nigerian brother, a female Nigerian student, and me. Then they let us go at about 10 o'clock last night… I've been kidnapped twice in a year but I'm convinced that God will destroy the work of the Devil. Another important thing to stress is this: the two kidnappings took place on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, October 13th."
