A few steps from the Cabeço (the hill), I met up with my friends at the place called Valinhos (in Fatima, Portugal). It is a circular area, bordered by a stone wall, surrounded by many trees, similar to a small public park. At its center stands a large statue of Our Lady, protected by a stone dome.
It is here that the Blessed Virgin appeared on Sunday, August 19, 1917, to the young shepherds. Her monthly visit had been postponed because the seers were held captive by the administrator of the canton on the 13th of that month. We took a good look at the statue, which is quite faithful to the description given by the seers. Mary is dressed simply, without a crown on her head. She wears a long white dress, without a belt, partly hidden by a thick veil which goes down to her feet. She holds a rosary between her fingers.
In this place, at the end of her visit, Mary felt a great sadness. She declared: "Pray, pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because they have no one that makes sacrifices and prays for them."
