In 1988, when the Berlin Wall was still in place and atheistic communism still seemed to hold the reins of power in the Soviet Empire, Bishop Hnilica, referring to the resistance born in Poland, said:
“Can we really win? Yes, we can! We're 100% sure we'll win, because the Mother of God says it in God's name: God wills it! We're fighting a battle with an assured outcome. God can't lose, so the Mother of God can't lose.
We are already victorious. When soldiers know that their generals are certain of victory, they go into battle with joy and enthusiasm. We have this guarantee: we are the victors. We will only lose when we separate ourselves from God, from Christ.”
Bishop Pavol Mária Hnilica
