St. Eadmer of Canterbury: Mary's joy at Jesus' Ascension

If Mary experienced great joy when her Son lived bodily beside her, and just as much joy when that same Son, after destroying death, rose from the underworld, would she have felt less joy when her Son, before her very eyes, entered heaven with that flesh which, as she well knew, he had taken from her?

Who has ever said such a thing, or believed that her happiness in this moment could be compared to all the joys that preceded it?

The good mothers of this world are accustomed to feel great gladness when their sons are raised to earthly honors; and this mother - undoubtedly a good mother! - would she not have rejoiced with ineffable joy when she saw her only son enter heaven with power and dominion and, ascending, reach the throne of God the Father Almighty?
