On February 28, 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared for the eleventh time to the shepherdess Bernadette in Lourdes (Pyrenees, France), and over a thousand people attended the apparition. Bernadette again performed the penitential gestures (eating bitter herbs, drinking water). She was then taken to Judge Ribes, who threatened her with imprisonment.
During the night of February 28 to March 1, Catherine Latapie, a local resident, soaked her dislocated arm in the spring water: her arm and hand regained their agility.
Healings began to occur in Lourdes as early as the time of the apparitions. Most were tied to the spring water. Bernadette has always refused to allow this water to be called miraculous, or for the healings to be attributed to her personally. As far as she was concerned, only faith and prayer brought about cures.
