This story happened in May 1883. Therese of Lisieux recounts in her autobiography:

“One day I saw Papa enter Marie's room where I was lying in bed; he gave her several gold coins with an expression of great sadness and told her to write to Paris and have masses offered at Our Lady of Victories so that she would cure a poor little girl.

One Sunday (during the novena of masses), Marie went out into the garden, leaving me with Leonie who was reading by the window, and after a few minutes I began to call out almost in a whisper: “Mama...Mama”. At last, Marie returned, then turned to the Blessed Virgin and prayed with the fervor of a mother asking for her child's life, obtaining what she desired:

Suddenly the statue of the Blessed Virgin looked beautiful to me, but what penetrated to the depths of my soul was the “ravishing smile of the Blessed Virgin”. Then all my sorrows vanished, and two big tears sprang from my eyelids and ran silently down my cheeks.

A miracle was needed, and Our Lady of Victories provided it.”
