A quarter of Lithuania's churches are named after the Virgin Mary. And yet this country only converted to Christianity in 1387, after Jagiello, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, embraced the Catholic religion and the whole nation imitated him.
So great was the Marian fervor of the Lithuanians, from the common people to the nobility, that Pope Pius XI once said: "Lithuania is Mary's country".
The country's most important shrines dedicated to Mary are those of Siluva, Kalvarija (or Varduva), Pazaislis (near Kaunas) and Krekenava (in the north).
In the capital, Kaunas, the cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
In Trakai, the faithful venerate Our Lady of Good Counsel; in Palanga, Our Lady of Lourdes; in Vilnius, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Gates of Dawn, Mother of Mercy, contains a centuries-old, miraculous icon which is an object of public veneration, and is a major site of pilgrimages for Lithuanians and Poles. Vilnius is considered the Lithuanian "Czestochowa".
