Born in Rouen, France, in 1891, and killed by tuberculosis in 1933 in the Community of Pieuse-Union, Marcelle Lanchon (in religion Sister Marie-France) received several apparitions (1) of Jesus and Mary during the First World War.
On September 8, 1914 - the Feast of the Nativity of Mary - Marcelle was praying in the chapel of Our Lady of the Armies in Versailles when Virgin Mary appeared to her, accompanied by St. Michael and St. Therese, and gave her the following message:
"If, in union with my divine Son, I love all the nations he redeemed with his Blood, see how I particularly cherish your beloved country. My Son desires that images and statues be made representing me in this way, and that I be invoked under the title of ‘Queen of France’. If this new desire of his divine Heart is fulfilled, France will once again become especially mine. I will take her under my maternal protection forever, and my Son will be pleased to shower abundant blessings upon her."
The Mother of God appeared a second time to Marcelle, dressed in a blue mantle decorated with fleur-de-lys and edged with white ermine, with her feet resting on a globe with the word "France" written on the left. She opened her coat, revealing a blue sash and tricolor scarf.

(1) There has been no official investigation into the apparitions witnessed by Marcelle Lanchon. However, Mgr Roland-Gosselin, bishop of Versailles from 1931, authorized and approved the Pious Union of Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of which Marcelle was one of the first members. The bishop also allowed the image of Mary, Queen of France to be printed and accorded an indulgence to those who recite the prayer revealed during the apparitions.
