On the day of his elevation to the dignity of Prince-Primate of Hungary, Cardinal Mindszenty called on the faithful: "Let us be a people of prayer. If we learn to pray again, we'll have an inexhaustible source of strength and confidence. I put my trust in the millions and millions of prayers, of pilgrimages and in my Mother's rosary."
In 1948, he declared, "My deepest wish would be for a million Hungarian families to take the rosary in their hands and implore Mary." And in one of his pastoral letters: "We see the finger of God in the events of history - even in the dangers and storms. This is why our trust in Him will never waver. This is why we call you to place your destiny - through Mary - in God's hands. Let us return to the oldest sources of our Hungarian heritage! Let us once again give the Virgin Mary the name of Queen, so that she may take control of our destiny."
This was his prayer to the Mother of God: "Mary, our Mother, what we endure in sorrow, we offer in atonement. Let the sighs and cries, the fear, the bitterness, the silent complaint of the world serve to atone for our sins. We are ready to suffer, Sorrowful Mother, as much as your Son sees fit for our salvation. Nevertheless, we beg you, lift up our nation, tried as Job was, and show that you are still our Mother."
