During this whispered conversation, the child's convulsions disappeared, he fell asleep and was now resting peacefully in his crib. The doctor declared that the child’s condition was stable, and that there was nothing to worry about. He prepared to leave.
When the baby's parents asked what they owed him for saving their child, the generous doctor replied: "Absolutely nothing! The honor of having been the messenger of the Mother of God more than compensates me for this eventful night. But now, please drive me home quickly."
On reaching his house, the doctor in turn asked what he owed. "Doctor," the driver replied, "with the joy of driving home the Messenger of the Mother of God, I am amply paid. You can be sure that my wife will be praying to the Blessed Virgin every day to settle our debt of gratitude to you in this way."
Afterwards, the good doctor returned several times to see the little child whom he had so unexpectedly saved. And every year, he received an arrangement of flowers as a token of gratitude from his parents.
