A German Catholic priest reported that he once saw an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary exposed in a prominent place in Field Marshal Hindenburg’s study. As the priest expressed his surprise, the old Lutheran replied: "It is because I see in the Blessed Virgin the incarnation of the human values that I need for my life."
Can one dream of a more beautiful definition of what Mary has brought to the world? To a world given over entirely to the pride of life, Mary teaches the humility of Bethlehem. To a world dominated by money, she points to the poverty of Nazareth. To a world full of deceit and lies, she brings truth and simplicity. To a world that is increasingly hardened by hatred, she repeats her lesson of gentleness. To an impure and vain world, she offers the testimony of her fruitful virginity. To an aging world, she brings her eternal youth.
