The Virgin, like all Israel, wondered about the identity of the foretold Messiah whom God was to send very soon. Who would he really be? A new presence of God among men was expected, a new Temple, not made by human hands... However, the prophecies announced something even more mysterious:

- a priest who would be called "Lord", seated at the right hand of God: "Oracle of the Lord to my Lord: sit at my right hand, while I have made your enemies the footstool of your feet. Your scepter is a scepter of power. From Zion, dominate even the heart of the enemy. You are Prince, from the day you were born, sacred honors are due to you from the womb, from the dawn of your youth. The Lord has sworn and will not deny it: 'You are a priest forever, according to the order of King Melchisedech'" (Ps 109:1-4);

  • a true son of God: "I will be a son to him, and he will be a father to me" (2 Sa 7:11). "You are my son; today I have begotten you". (Ps 2:1);
  • a man raised to the level of God: "I contemplated, in the visions of the night: Behold, coming on the clouds of heaven, like a Son of Man. He came up to the Ancient One and was led into his presence." (Dan 7:9-14)
  • Or the very special presence of God himself, according to other promises: "He will be called Emmanuel", that is, "God with us" (Is 7:14).

And the people were emboldened to pray: "Ah, if you would tear open the heavens and come down!" (Is 63:19)
