"There are days when patrons and saints are not enough. Be they the greatest patrons and the greatest saints. Or ordinary patrons and ordinary saints. And there are days when you have to go up, up, up, up, and up.

Then you have to summon up your courage. And go directly to the one who is above all. Be bold. Just once. To address boldly the one who is infinitely beautiful. Because she is also infinitely good. The one who intercedes. The only one who can speak with the authority of a mother. To address boldly the one who is infinitely pure. Because she is also infinitely gentle. Who is infinitely noble. Because she is also infinitely courteous. Who is infinitely rich. Because she is also infinitely poor. Who is infinitely high. Because she is also infinitely humble. Who is infinitely great. Because she is also infinitely small. Infinitely humble. A young mother. Who is infinitely young. Because she is also infinitely a mother. Who is infinitely straight. Because she is also infinitely stooping. Who is infinitely joyful. Because she is also infinitely sorrowful. Who is all Greatness and all Faith. Because she is also all Charity. Who is all Faith and all Charity. Because she is also all Hope. Amen."

Charles Péguy (1873-1914), excerpt from The Portal of the Mystery of the Second Virtue
