Each mystery has its own spiritual fruit, which Pope John Paul II calls "the fruit of holiness". We will continue today to look at those spiritual fruits (Continued from October 9):
Fruits of the sorrowful mysteries
1st Mystery: The Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Olives (Mt 26: 36-50; Mk 14: 32-46; Lk 22: 39-48; Jn 18: 1-8): contrition (regret for our sins); 2nd Mystery: The Flagellation of Jesus (Mt 27: 26; Mk. 15:15; Jn 19:1): mortification of our senses and our body; 3rd Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns (Mt 27:27-301; Mk 15:16-20; Jn 18:37; Jn 19: 2-15): mortification of the mind; 4th Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross (Mt 27: 31-33; Mk 15: 20-22; Lk 23: 26-32; Jn 19: 16-17): patience in trials; 5th Mystery: The Crucifixion and death of Jesus on the cross (Mt 27: 34-61; Mk 15: 23-47; Lk 23: 33-56; Jn 19: 18-42): a greater love for Jesus, who died to save us.
Fruits of the glorious mysteries
1st Mystery: The Resurrection of Jesus (Mt 28: 1-15; Mk 16: 1-18; Lk 24: 1-12; Jn 20: 1-28): faith; 2nd Mystery: The Ascension of Jesus into Heaven (Lk 24: 39-53; Mk 16: 19-20; Acts 1: 6-9): hope and desire for Heaven; 3rd Mystery: The outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1: 14 - 2: 47): the descent of the Holy Spirit into our souls; 4th Mystery: The Dormition and Assumption of Mary into heaven (2 Kings 2: 11; Tradition; LG 59): the grace of a happy death; 5th Mystery: the Coronation of Mary in heaven (Rev 12: 1; Tradition; LG 59 and 68): a greater devotion to the Virgin Mary.
Thus the contemplation and meditation of the mysteries of Jesus' life, through the prayer of the Rosary, constitute a path of conversion for the mind and the heart.
Let us head Father de Montfort’s advice:
"Be careful not to look upon this practice as the common man does, and even as many proud scholars do, as minor and of little consequence; it is really great, sublime and divine. It was given to us by heaven, to convert the most hardened sinners and the most obstinate heretics. God has attached to it grace in this life and glory in the next. The saints have practiced it and the sovereign Pontiffs have approved it."
