As God, he loved her as the purest, most perfect of all creatures; he preserved her from all sins and adorned her with every grace and every virtue.
As a man, he loved her as the most respectful, docile, submissive, and affectionate child knows how to love. What favors, what sanctity the Heart of the Son must have communicated to the Heart of the Mother, during the nine months that He rested in her virginal womb as in a cradle, and during the thirty years of intimate life He spent with her in Nazareth! In the course of his public life, it was often at the prayer of his Mother that Jesus performed his miracles, as at Cana in Galilee, so that the women of Israel, undoubtedly jealous of such great glory, cried out, "Blessed is she who fed you!"
In Heaven, he wants his Mother to be the dispenser of his treasures, the channel through which his graces descend to Earth. He is pleased to answer the prayers addressed to him and to confirm by miracles the confidence his servants have in him. He wants his Church to have the deepest respect for her, the most tender love, and the most complete confidence. He likes to see her name always united to his, and when a church is erected to his glory, he wants it to house a humble altar to Mary. Finally, he wishes that wherever the Son is adored, the Mother also be honored: Invenerunt puerum cum Maria.
If we want to please Jesus, let us love and respect Mary. Let us love her as good children love their mother; she has the same tenderness and devotion for us. Her Heart, like that of her Son, is an abyss of love and mercy.
Let us therefore never separate, in our devotion, the Heart of Mary from that of Jesus. Let us honor and love them both with all the effusiveness of our soul. They have always been closely united; let us not separate them in our affection.
