August 16 – Saint Stephen of Hungary (d. 1038), who consecrated his country to the Mother of God - feast of Saint Joachim, father of Mary

Anne, meaning "Grace", gave birth to Mary, meaning "Sovereign"

Joachim chose Anne, an incomparable and praiseworthy woman, as his wife. Like the first Anne of ancient times, who was afflicted with infertility and had obtained by prayer and a promise to give birth to Samuel, this new Anne also, in the same way, by supplications and a promise, obtained from God to give birth to the Mother of God.

In this respect, she is not inferior to all other illustrious women. This is because grace - for this is the meaning of the name Anne - gave birth to a sovereign - this is what the name Mary means. Mary, in fact, who is the Mother of the Creator, was truly established the queen of all creatures. She was born in the house of Joachim in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, and was taken to the Temple. Then, "planted in the house of God", and nourished by the Spirit, like a fertile olive tree, she became the dwelling place of all the virtues. Detaching her Heart from all the desires of this life and of the flesh, she kept her soul virgin as well as her body, as befits one who would conceive God in her womb.
