April 3 – Our Lady of the Cross (Italy, 1490)

The Virgin Mary is with me as I pray on my rehab bike

I love reading your daily email (Editor's note: A Moment with Mary) about the Virgin Mary. Thanks to this letter, I went to confession during Lent, after 3 years without receiving this sacrament!

Because I have multiple sclerosis, I had a sense of hopelessness. Anticipating a total loss of autonomy in the near future, I was contemplating ending my life so as not to become a burden to my family.

The priest gave me a penance of 10 rosaries, as he explained to me that our Lord was actually taking 50% of my pain upon himself. This penance was salutary: I spread out the 10 rosaries over many days, taking advantage of rehab times to say them. And since then, I can't get on my exercise bike without a feeling of joy at the idea of praying the rosary while pedaling.

Now, when I'm on my bike, Our Lady accompanies me and doesn't leave me for the rest of the day. I am not saying it's a miracle (I didn't pray for one), but I feel much better now and little by little my leg and hand, which I thought were past healing by now, are becoming more mobile.

A faithful reader who now feels the presence of our Blessed Mother at his side.
