Like many movements of Christian renewal given by the Holy Spirit to the Church today – the Legion of Mary, the Foyers de Charité, the Focolare, and all the communities born from the Charismatic Renewal – the Schoenstatt movement is characterized by the important place given to the Virgin Mary in the Mystery of Salvation, following the spirituality of Saint Louis de Montfort. Its full name is the "Schoenstatt Apostolic Movement".
Schoenstatt Centers are present everywhere in the world today.
The word "schoenstatt" means "beautiful place". It is the name of the original site, located in the municipality of Vallendar, a few kilometers north of Koblenz, on the banks of the Rhine in central-western Germany. The name was given to this green valley in the 12th century, when a monastery of Augustinian nuns was built there.
Today, Schoenstatt, located near Vallendar, has grown into a real, unique type of city: it houses the headquarters of various Catholic organizations and is known for its familial atmosphere: the population consists of consecrated priests, single and married laypeople, sick people, and students... According to their degree of commitment, the members are divided into Secular Institutes (six), Unions, Leagues and a branch of "pilgrims".
All the members of these organizations, whatever their background (nationality, profession and state of life), have close ties with the heart of the movement, which is in Schoenstatt.
