On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War (1950-1953), which resulted in nearly two million deaths, Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, Archbishop of Seoul, capital of South Korea and Apostolic Administrator of Pyongyang, consecrated the Diocese of Pyongyang to Our Lady of Fatima.
On June 25, 2020 in Myeongdong Cathedral, Cardinal Yeom, b. 1943, recalled his own memories of the war: "Today, if I evoke some events that happened in our country 70 years ago, it is to ask all of you to gather your energy and unite your hearts, to help build up our Korean peninsula, so that all the people can be freed from the chains of the past and live in the true peace that the Lord gives us."
To that intention, the Archdiocese of Seoul celebrated a solemn but simple Mass, emphasizing international solidarity. Thus South Koreans were able to mark this historic anniversary. Cardinal Yeom, through his homily and his desire to consecrate the diocese of Pyongyang to Our Lady of Fatima, wished to encourage the Korean faithful to a spiritual awakening and to engage in the new evangelization of the Korean peninsula.
