My grandmother was Polish. In the 1910s, as a young girl of between 10 and 15, she lived in the country, in the Polish Carpathian region, near a vast and deep forest that she had to cross to fetch water every day for her family's needs. The forest was so thick that it was very dark and she was always gripped with fear because there were many wolves in the Carpathians at that time.
Did my grandmother pray as she walked? Probably. Anyway, one day she was drawn to a light shining in the darkness. When she approached she saw a very beautiful lady, radiating light, who told her that she should never again be frightened in the forest, then she disappeared.
After my grandmother had told the neighbors what she had seen, they showed her a picture of the Blessed Virgin that she had never seen, and she testified that it was indeed that same Lady, dressed in the same way, the same one that she had seen in the forest!
I got this story from my mother, who was her daughter. I can't suspect my grandmother of having made it up. I’ve never shared it before, until today. I always felt my grandmother to be very close to me, and the Blessed Virgin not too far either!
