On the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated in the Catholic Church on September 14th, a large prayer gathering took place throughout Poland, called "Poland under the Cross."
This event, organized by lay Catholics, was the spiritual continuation of previous events: the "Great Day of Penance" at the shrine of Jasna Gora in Czestochowa, and "Rosary at the Borders," which inspired similar prayer rallies in other countries, like the United States, Ireland, the British Isles, Australia, Italy and many others.
Maciej Bodasiński, spokesman for that event, explains: We first organized the "Great Day of Penance," during which we asked God’s forgiveness for the sins of the Polish nation, and a Rosary was prayed by people along all the borders of our country. We are convinced that the Virgin invites us to stand under her Son’s Cross. Right now, when so many people turn away from Christ, when the eternal life of so many people is at risk, when our eyes are looking more and more at earthly things, we want to look up and look at Jesus, who is dying for us on the Cross.
Lech Dokowicz, a Polish convert and producer of religious films, comments: The hearts of bishops and lay Catholics are moved everywhere in Poland, while the Prayer under the Cross continues to gain spiritual momentum and grows. The history of our country clearly shows that when the Polish nation remains faithful to God, the Gospel and the Holy Cross, it lives and thrives. We want to rebuild our bond with God. We want to fight for our faith and for holiness. We want to pray to God to pour the Holy Spirit over us, the Polish people, so that we can regain the power to fight against sin.
