Nestled in the heart of the Hautes-Alpes region (France), 900m above sea level, the Shrine of Our Lady of Laus is a hidden gem. The beautiful natural setting and serenity of the place aren’t the only attractions of this Marian shrine: After 54 years of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, Laus also carries a message and offers a spiritual experience out of the ordinary.
2018 may be the ideal year to discover or rediscover this mountain shrine of the Alps, explains Fr. Ludovic Frère, Vicar General of the Diocese of Gap and Embrun. Three anniversaries are jointly occurring this year at the Shrine of Our Lady of Laus: the 300 years of the end of the apparitions; the 300 years since the death of Benedicta Rencurel (quite logically, since she was favored with apparitions until the end of her life); and the 10 years of official recognition of the supernatural character of the events that occurred for the shepherdess of Laus.
The person of Benedicta (Benoite) Rencurel necessarily marked this shrine: she had her first encounter with the Virgin Mary at 17, and continued to receive visions until she was 71. The “Beautiful Lady” of Laus accompanied the shepherdess throughout her life, from her youth to her old age.
