March 9 – Our Lady of Miracles (Treviso, Italy, 1510) - Saint Dominic Savio (1842 - 1857)

My friends will be Jesus and Mary!

Dominic Savio (a young Italian saint) made his first Holy Communion at age 7, in 1849, and on that day wrote his resolutions: "1) I will go to Confession and Communion as often as my confessor will allow. 2) I will sanctify Sundays and holy days in a special way. 3) Jesus and Mary will be my friends. 4) Death, but not sin."

Don Bosco passed through the region in October 1854, and heard about Dominic. Then he met him, and was "amazed to discover the work that the divine grace had already accomplished in a boy so young."

On December 8, 1854, when Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Dominic made the consecration to the Blessed Virgin and renewed the promises of his first communion: "Mary, I give you my heart; let it be yours forever. Jesus and Mary, always be my friends, but I beg you to let me die rather than have the misfortune to commit one sin." His life was so completely transformed from that day, that Don Bosco began to write down his actions in order not to forget them.

In 1857, Dominic fell ill, and died on March 9th. His face aglow, he breathed his last with his hands clasped and crossed on his chest, lying perfectly still. He was only 15 years old. Don Bosco wrote about his life, and could not evoke his memory without weeping.
