July 23 – Saint Bridget of Sweden (d. 1373)

The demon shouted: “I have a complaint about a woman!” (I)

After the death of her son, Saint Bridget was transported to a vast and magnificent palace. There she saw Jesus Christ sitting on his throne of judgment, surrounded by an innumerable court of Angels and Saints. Near Him was His Most Holy Mother, who listened attentively to the judgment.

Saint Bridget saw, at the feet of the Judge, looking like a newborn child, the soul of the deceased, trembling, unable to see or hear what was happening, but having an inward perception. On the right hand of the Judge and near the poor soul stood an Angel; the devil was on the left; neither of them touched the soul.

Then the demon shouted: “Listen, Almighty Judge! I have a complaint about a woman who is my Sovereign and your Mother, to whom your love gave all power in heaven and earth, and over us, the demons of hell. She has unfairly stolen the soul that appears before you. In good justice, I had the right to seize her at the moment of her exit from the body and to bring it, with my companions, to your court. Now, O Judge, as soon as the soul left the body, this woman, your Mother, snatched her up, covered her with her powerful protection, and presented her to you."
