"Let the modern iconoclasts meditate the following fact that happened during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
Some anarchists were trying to "cleanse" a city of all its religious objects. They attempted to tip over a statue of the Virgin Mary, but couldn’t do it! It looked like a mysterious power kept her in place. Then one of them, driven by his fanaticism, climbed on the base of the statue to behead it. He managed to do it, to the delight of his friends, who gave vent to their hatred of religion around the mutilated statue.
A few weeks later, the anarchist went to the doctor because of some problem with his hand. The doctor was dismayed: "These are leprosy spots!" he exclaimed. Perplexed, he asked, "Were you in contact with any lepers?” – “No.” – “Are you in contact with foreigners from Africa or Asia?” – “No”. – “When did you notice these spots on your hands?" Hearing this, the man started crying, admitting that these symptoms appeared on the day he had desecrated the statue of the Virgin."
