January 4 – Our Lady of Roses (Italy, 1418) – Saint Angela of Foligno

The Blessed Virgin healed the monk with her milk

There was, in the 12th century, a monk from the region of Soissons (France), who had a great love for the Virgin Mary. Whenever he had free time, he would pray long prayers at the foot of her holy image.

One day a strange illness came over him. A continuous and very painful rattle seized his lungs, preventing him from speaking. His face turned repulsive, covered with monstrous sores. No treatment seemed to relieve his condition, and he endured a true passion of sufferings, to the point that his livid complexion made him look dead. So the community made preparations for his funeral.

But the Virgin Mary did not forget her servant. She appeared to him, wiped his wounds with her milk, and said: "Don’t be afraid. Since you have served me well, I will not let you die in such a miserable manner. You will see that I know how to love!” Touching his raw flesh with a light touch of the hand, she added: "Now you are well and healed. And I want you to know I am reserving a place for you in Paradise, when the time comes for your spirit to separate from your body.” Then she left.

When the monks returned with a coffin, the surprise caused a great commotion! "Ah!” the monk said, “ignorant men, and of little faith! With all this noise and clamor, you made the Virgin Mary leave!” After this, convinced that a miracle had taken place, the whole community quickly gathered to thank the King of Heaven and his Mother, singing holy praises to God.
