During the general election in India’s western state of Gujarat, held on December 9-14, 2017, Archbishop Thomas Ignatius Macwan of Gandhinagar sent a message on behalf of all the state’s bishops to invite the faithful to pray for the upcoming election.
The bishops were concerned about the current situation in the country, where there is a growing sense of insecurity among minorities, especially the Christians. They asked the faithful to “organize prayer services" in parishes and convents, and to use the Rosary as a protective weapon, so that the elected officials would remain "faithful to the Indian Constitution and respect every human being, without any discrimination."
A call for prayer was also issued by the Secretary General of the Indian Bishops' Conference, Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas.
