On January 28, 1840, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a Daughters of Charity novice during her first spiritual retreat at the Mother House, at 140, rue du Bac, in Paris. The young Sister, Justine Bisqueyburu, was praying in a room above the chapel ... Suddenly, the Blessed Virgin appeared to her ...
The Virgin held in her right hand her heart surmounted by flames, and, in the other hand, a scapular made of green fabric. On one side of this scapular was the image of Mary and, on the other side, a heart inflamed with rays, brighter than the sun and transparent as crystal. This heart, pierced by a sword, was surrounded by an oval inscription surmounted by a gold cross, with the words: "Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death."
That same day, an inner voice revealed to Sister Justine the meaning of this vision. She understood that this new scapular would contribute to the conversion of those who do not have faith and, above all, that it would assure them a happy death…
... It was Father Aladel, confidant of Saint Catherine Labouré, who became the confidant of Sister Justine.
The making of the scapular was delayed a long time, on account of which the Blessed Virgin complained several times to the Sister in various apparitions between 1840 and 1846. But, when it started being distributed, conversions and cures were reported in great numbers. Since then, the Green Scapular has always brought multiple graces.
