Following their victory in the Champions League on May 26, 2018, Zinedine Zidane and his players from the Spanish football club Real Madrid went on Sunday to the Cathedral of Santa María La Real in La Almudena, in Madrid, to present their trophy to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
What would be more natural than presenting one’s trophy to the Blessed Virgin, when you have just won a competition as prestigious as the Champions League? And for the third time in a row! This hadn’t happened since 1976. On Sunday, May 27th, before the celebration of their victory of the day against Liverpool (3-1) with the fans, the players of Real Madrid made a detour to thank the “high-ranked people.”
The players, sporting their best suits, were able to shake hands with several prelates at the entrance of the Madrilenian Cathedral.
After religiously listening to their president, Florentino Perez, and several priests gathered for the occasion, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo and Zinedine Zidane's team captain, Sergio Ramos, climbed the steps leading to the statue of the Blessed Virgin to present their trophy.
