George Prêtre, a famous conductor (born on August 14, 1924, in Waziers, northern France), who died on January 4, 2017, was not only a brilliant man, but a man who had a deep Christian faith. For instance, once when his wife Gina, who survived him, was seriously ill, he made a pilgrimage on foot from Castres to Lourdes (170 miles) to pray Mother Mary for her recovery.
His funeral was held in the church of Naves near Castres. Georges and Gina were true children of the north of France, nevertheless the couple grew fond of the region of Castres, where George eventually died.
Besides the fact that he was a remarkable conductor, many articles and programs dedicated to his work and personality omitted to mention that George Prêtre was throughout his life a man of a vibrant Catholic faith. It is not surprising that the family obituary announced his death as “God calling him home.”
