December 9 – First apparitions Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexico, 1531) - Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (1474-1548)

The most splendid pilgrimage in Mexico

The most splendid pilgrimage in Mexico is by far the one in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Every December 12th, the feast day at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located in a neighborhood of Mexico City, is celebrated with the arrival of millions of pilgrims who travel for days from their place of origin, to show their love for the brown-skinned Madonna, their national patroness.

The pilgrims wear uniforms, traditional clothes, or traditional dress dating back to the time of the apparitions… representing the moment of the apparition of the Virgin to Saint Juan Diego. They carry signs, pictures, candles, and offerings.

The flow of pilgrims increases each year! The shrine receives nearly 500 pilgrimages in December alone, and about 2,000 yearly!

With 14 million visitors a year, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the second most visited Catholic monument in the world, after the Vatican.
