Nazareth is the name of this earthly spot unique in History: where God became flesh in the womb of a virgin. This is where the Virgin Mary lived the everyday life that all mothers live. Her life was humble and offered to God through all the daily tasks she performed: looking after the house, the garden, supporting Joseph in his work, bringing up Jesus, praying in the home and synagogue, sharing her life with friends and neighbors. Just like all other mothers across the world...
Just like all mothers, but having a Child who would become the Savior of the World! Thus, surrounded by the loving care of Mary and Joseph for the first thirty years of His life on earth (his ‘hidden life’), the Word of God made flesh grew in up Nazareth. With them was able to grow the spirituality of family life: that simple spirituality of Nazareth that serves as a model for our own families.
Numerous archaeological remains from the time of Christ, discovered in Galilee and all over Palestine, have greatly helped to build up a solid picture of this Holy Family’s life. In the same way, several historians from the time of Christ make reference to the existence of Jesus the Nazarene in the Palestine of Tiberius, the Roman emperor of the period; these bear witness to the historic truth of the Gospel.
