"There shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse" (Is 11:1) In the midst of Israel's waiting, the Virgin also remembered the promises from God that Samuel made to David, "It shall happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your seed after you, who shall be one of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you" (1 Chr 17:11-14). And those promises were repeated and confirmed subsequently by many other prophets like Jeremiah: "Behold, the days come, says the Lord, that I will raise to David a righteous branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land" (Jer 23:5). Amos: "In that day I will raise up the tent of David who is fallen, and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old" (Am 9: 11), or Isaiah: "There shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord." (...) "It shall happen in that day, that the root of Jesse, who stands for an ensign of the peoples, to him shall the nations seek; and his resting-place shall be glorious" (Is 11:1-11).
