In this instant was decreed first of all, that the Divine Word should assume a soul and a body; second, that other beings would be made in his image and would compose humankind; from that moment all men were present in God's thought. The hypostatic union of the second Person of the Holy Trinity with human nature thus was the first work ad extra, since after God had known and loved himself in himself, it was fitting that he would know and love what is the most immediate reality to his divinity, as is the hypostatic union; that the Word would be the head of all the creatures, and that by him they would come to their Creator.
