August 14 - Vigil of the Assumption of Our Lady - Saint Maximilian Kolbe (d. 1941)

The Holy Spirit’s Spouse

The Virgin Mary can justifiably be called “the Holy Spirit’s Spouse”. This well-known name in patristic and theological tradition was alluded to in the New Testament. Father Kolbe explained that, ‘it is an analogy to indicate the unutterable, intimate and fertile union between the Spirit and Mary. The Spirit established His own residence in Mary at the time of her conception: He took absolute possession of her and was so deep within her that the name of the Holy Spirit’s Spouse only expresses a remote, pale and imperfect shadow of this union.”
